At the center of Graben stands the Pestsäule (Plague Column), also known as the Dreifaltigkeitssäule (Trinity Column).
In 1679, between 75,000 and 150,000 citizens of Vienna fell victim to the devastating plague epidemic. Once the crisis was finally over, Emperor Leopold I decided to have a memorial built to remember those who were lost. A distinguished group of sculptors and architects set to work on this monument that was finally inaugurated in 1693.
The gilded sculpture group at the top represents the Holy Trinity, seated on a cloud.
The column's central sculpture group shows allegorical figures depicting Faith defeating the Plague.
